Mandible Fracture and Fractured 707
This 3.5 month old Standardbred filly was referred to us for oral exam after fracturing her mandible 9 weeks ago. She had a firm left mandibular swelling and an associated draining tract. On oral exam, she had a complicated crown root fracture of her 707.
Radiographs revealed an apical abscess of her 707. There was a large callus mid-level of the horizontal ramus of the left mandible, which showed that her mandible fracture was healing well.

Because of her age and demeanor, extraction of the 707 was performed under general anesthesia. Post-extraction radiographs revealed a vacated 707 alveolus. Bone wax was placed as an obturator in the alveolus which will be expelled on its own.
Extraction of the fractured tooth should clear up the discharge from the draining tract within the next few weeks, barring the formation of any sequestra. The developing bud of the permanent tooth is in the region of her fracture. This permanent tooth may have been damaged in the trauma or by prematurely shedding of the deciduous tooth. This permanent tooth may need to be extracted in the future.
