Amelie McAndrews, DVM, DAVDC - Equine
Dr. McAndrews is a Board Certified Equine Dentist™ and a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College. There are only a handful of Board Certified Equine Dentists™ and she is the only practicing equine dental specialist in New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania. Besides being the practice owner of Garden State Equine Veterinary Dentistry, she is a clinical associate at University of Pennsylvania New Bolton Center and manages the referral dentistry caseload there.
Originally from Connecticut, Dr. McAndrews completed an internship at a general and referral practice in Arizona before spending five years at a general equine practice in New Jersey. During her time as a general practitioner, her interests and caseload became increasingly focused on equine dentistry. She found she could significantly improve her patient’s quality of life by addressing problems found through a comprehensive oral exam. Garden State Equine Veterinary Dentistry was founded in 2015, with the goal of being able to help more horses through better oral health. She uses minimally invasive techniques for better outcomes in equine oral surgery.
Dr. McAndrews regularly presents to equine veterinarians on dental disease and teaches equine dentistry to veterinary students. She frequently attends equine dentistry continuing education meetings and wet labs.
Driven by a life-long desire to be an equine veterinarian, Dr. McAndrews attended Michigan State University, completing a bachelor’s degree in animal science before graduating with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2009 and followed by an internship at an equine hospital in Arizona in 2009 - 2010. Dr. McAndrews completed a rigorous equine dentistry residency program in 2016 - 2020. Her extensive background in horses includes eventing, as well as managing and training horses for a thoroughbred racehorse rescue group.
Dr. McAndrews thinks it is important to be an active member of the community. Dr. McAndrews is a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association (NJVMA), Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry, New Jersey Association of Equine Practitioners (NJAEP), and American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). A graduate of the United States Pony Clubs, she enjoys teaching local pony clubbers horse management skills and horse owners about equine dentistry.
